Chapter 1: The Academy of Shadows

Sixteen-year-old Alex Thornfield had always known there was something different about the prestigious Ravencroft Academy. It wasn't just the Gothic architecture or the way mist seemed to perpetually cling to the ancient towers. It was the way students would sometimes disappear for days, only to return with no memory of where they'd been, and the curious fact that no one ever seemed to graduateΓÇöthey simply vanished one day, never to be spoken of again.

As Alex walked through the ornate iron gates for the first time, their scholarship letter clutched tightly in one hand, they couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking into something far more significant than just another boarding school. The other students moved with an odd, purposeful grace, and more than once, Alex could have sworn they saw someone levitating books or causing flowers to bloom with a simple touch.

"Welcome to Ravencroft," said a warm voice behind them. Alex turned to see a tall woman with silver-streaked hair and kind but piercing green eyes. "I'm Headmistress Nightshade. We've been expecting you, Alex Thornfield. Your grandmother spoke of you often."

Alex's breath caught. Their grandmother had died when Alex was only five, and their parents had always been mysteriously vague about her life. "You knew my grandmother?"

"Lydia Thornfield was one of our most gifted students," the Headmistress said with a slight smile. "And if you're anything like her, you're about to discover that the world is far more magical than you ever imagined."
